One tactic that has worked for me is making appointments for my writing/research. If I make a Sunday meeting with myself and work out my calendar (see: http://www.insidehighered.com/advice/surviving/fall2 ), I try to guard the time I need to get the things done that are most important (if not always the most urgent). When someone asks me to do something, I look at the calendar and see if I have enough time, and if I don't, I tell them when I will next have time and ask if it will work for them -- and this is only for the things I /want/ to do. Anything I don't want to do, I've learned to just say no to. << That has taken a lot of courage and practice.
