Stepson calls Bingu wa Mutharika a tyrant on Facebook [updated]

25 July 2011

Really. I’m not making this up:

aaaaaarrrrghhh!!!…

That is Brian Chimombo, son of First Lady Calista Mutharika from a previous marriage saying “aaaaaarrrrghhh!!! My mum mum married a tyrant!!! i knew it was too good to be true!!!” and in a reply further down elaborating some:

i don’t wanna get into an argument with you, i really don’t, but know this: malawi was the most peaceful country in africa, and now people are dying in the streets, the press is being shut down and dpp thugs are sharpening machetes in the street. i don’t want to get intensely personal over facebook which is something I could do, but i won’t, and i won’t bring up the sacrifices our real father made to help make malawi a healthy democracy!!! he would be shifting in his grave!!! (emphasis added)

Already the story has made the online newspaper the Malawi Democrat, which reported “Brian’s Facebook rant comes at a time rumours circulated that the First Lady was contemplating divorce with Wa Mutharika because of his increasing authoritarian rule.”

Update: Brian Chimombo updated his status on 30 July to:

started off as a throwaway comment, then got blown out of proportion, then emotions got involved, then again got blown out of proportion, then began to doubt original comment, but as each day passes the veracity of the original comment is vindicated!!! 350 million dollars down, that’s a bad day at the roulette table!!!

The $350 million to which he’s referring is the US “hold” placed on a grant to improve Malawi’s electricity system (aptly referred to as the “power sector”).

I find the behaviour of a stepson as unMalawian and unchristian and a disrepect to your mother soyou wanted to choose aman for ur mother on behalf of your father? God forbid! Are defaming your parents for sympathy? Dziwa mako ndi mako Umafuna iweyo uwalowe chokolo. The problems in Malawi are normal and minor as compared to many Countries including the Western where peole go to bed with dogs
